SHELFORD RE-SIGNS WITH LIONS

11 November 2018

Kyle Shelford has agreed to a new one-year deal with the Swinton Lions ahead of the 2019 Championship campaign.

Swinton Lions are delighted to announce the re-signing of versatile forward Kyle Shelford for the 2019 Championship season.

Stuart Littler has strengthened his pack as Shelford has agreed to a new-year with the Lions, which will see him involved in the 2019 Championship campaign.

The 22-year-old joined Swinton ahead of the 2017 season from Wigan Warriors, where he was captain of the Academy side.

The forward also skippered the England Academy team, and played his amateur rugby at Shevington Sharks ARLFC.

Shelford scored five tries during the 2018 season, including a second-half effort in the crucial play-off fixture with Workington Town.

On the one-year extension, Shelford told swintonlionsrlfc.co.uk: “I am happy to have re-signed with Swinton.

“I’ve been playing with a few of the lads since being 16 so it will be good to take the field with them again, but also with the new boys that have signed. The game time I got last year was crucial to my development as a player and I am looking forward to what I can bring to the table this coming season.

“I’m excited to get back into it and set our goals for the year ahead. Every season brings new challenges, but with a strong pre-season under the belt and clear standards and aims, I believe we can build on for the future and have an impressive season.”

”HE IS A PLAYER WHO SETS STANDARDS”

Shelford becomes the ninth player from the 2018 squad to re-sign with the Lions, including second-rower Rhodri Lloyd and most-recently Ben Austin.

“Kyle is a player who really came into some form at the back end of last year and he is a player who sets standards in training,” Head Coach Stuart Littler explained.

“As lots of coaches have said previously, Kyle is a credit to his family and is definitely a player with his best years ahead of him. This year will be a big one for Kyle and I really believe he can develop to the next level.”

”HE IS A GREAT TRAINER AND CONSISTENT PERFORMER”

On the extension, Chairman Andy Mazey added: “I am really pleased to get a new improved deal with Kyle who is exactly the type of person and player we need around our club.

“Kyle adds value to the culture Stuart is implementing and having observed Kyle closely this year, on and off the field he is a true professional in every sense of the word, and model young professional. He’s a great trainer and consistent performer who will only continue to get better and develop further and he’s and absolute credit to his family.”
