KENGA SIGNS FOR THE LIONS

06 November 2018

Prop Forward Jose Kenga has agreed to a 12-month deal with the Swinton Lions, adding size to Stuart Littler’s pack ahead of the 2019 Championship campaign.

Swinton Lions are pleased to announce the signing of Jose Kenga on a 12-month deal, joining from League One club Keighley Cougars.

Kenga joins from the League One outfit, making 12 appearances and scoring one try throughout the 2018 season.

The powerful forward began his career at amateur side Hunslet Warriors, before joining Leeds Rhinos on the scholarship programme.

The 23 year-old joined the Cougars ahead of the 2018 campaign from Hunslet R.L.F.C., having also spent time with Sheffield Eagles reserves and Dewsbury Rams.

Jose admitted he had interest from other clubs, but the future of the Lions attracted him to join the side ahead of the competitive 2019 Championship campaign.

“It was also highly spoken of by different people. I can’t wait to get started, meet the boys and prepare for a great season ahead.

“I’m really excited for this new challenge,” Kenga told swintonlionsrlfc.co.uk

“This is something that I’ve been wanting for awhile and I’m just really happy for this opportunity. I had interest from clubs both in Championship and League One, but I was really sold by what this Club is about and my development as a player.”

Congo-born, Kenga adds strength to the pack alongside latest additions Frankie Halton and most-recently Lewis Hatton.

“JOSE WILL ADD SOME REAL GO-FORWARD AND DIRECTION TO OUR MIDDLE”

“I am happy to announce that Jose Kenga has agreed to join us for 2019. Jose will certainly add some presence to our ever-growing pack,” said Head Coach Stuart Littler.

“Jose will add some real go-forward and direction to our middle. I think he will be a big hit with our fans due to his all-action style. I am looking forward to working with Jose as we move our Club forwards.”

“WE HAVE ACQUIRED A PLAYER WHO WILL THRIVE IN OUR ENVIRONMENT”

On the latest signing, Chairman Andy Mazey added: Another great addition to our strong looking pack for 2019. Jose is clearly a big unit and a very powerful athlete who has come through a very good system at Leeds Rhinos and has since gone on to learn his trade in League One this past few seasons.

“I remember first noticing Jose playing reserve team rugby a few years go, funnily enough against Frankie Halton’s Leigh reserve team and thinking what a great prospect.

“Stuart did his homework and watched plenty of footage of Jose and really wanted him onboard and once I got to speak to Jose I immediately sense the desire to join Swinton and take on the challenge of the Championship and we believe we have acquired a player who will thrive in our environment working with our staff.

“Welcome Jose.”
