Wigan St Patrick’s 32 Swinton Lionesses 38

21 June 2021

The Lionesses pulled off a stunning victory on Sunday away to a well established Wigan St Patrick’s team.

The Lionesses scored eight tries, including doubles from Ellie Thirkell and Maddie Higson.

Lionesses’ Head Coach Martina Greenwood was thrilled. She said, “Today was only the third time that the girls have played collectively and all the hard work in training during the week paid off. The girls really took on board areas to develop from the defeat last week, and showed how much resilience and desire they have as a group. All of them really put into practice all I had asked of them, and we could not be prouder of all of these girls today.

“Each and every one of them wore the Swinton shirt with pride, stuck with it throughout the game and tackled their hearts out. There is still much work to be done, but these girls deserve all the praise this week. Well done ladies, onwards and upwards.”

Skipper Rebecca Roden couldn’t hide her feelings! She added, “Girls, I am so so proud of you all. We’ve just played 80 minutes of great rugby.  This was only our third game together and we’ve come together so well! We are a family. I’m so proud to put that shirt on and play along side each and everyone of you. Well played! I had to hold back the tears when we score that last try. Honestly I am so so so proud!”

The Lionesses next fixture will feature the Under 16s on Wednesday evening at Folly Lane. There will be no game next weekend as many of the Lionesses are representing Swinton at the upcoming Irish woman’s Rugby League international team trials on Saturday. Best of luck to all concerned!
