WHITEHAVEN 20 SWINTON LIONS 4

28 February 2023

IAN RIGG LEL Arena, Sunday

Despite domination of the ball the Lions suffered defeat in Cumbria as Whitehaven scored their first victory of the season. Haven had the first chance of the game when winger Jake Douglas went for the corner but was tackled into touch and then on eight minutes Andy Badrock looked like he had opened the scoring for the Lions, but he was judged offside from a kick touching down near the corner. Rhodri Lloyd and Jake Spedding then had chances but handling errors stopped them. Badrock then scored his fourth try in four games on seventeen minutes after a nice pass from Luke Waterworth but Dan Abram was unable to convert from far out. There was then another couple of chances for the Lions with firstly Jodry Gibson losing the ball near the line and then Josh Eaves was held up, but it was Haven who took the lead just before the break after an interception from his own line by Josh Rourke and he set up the position for Chris Taylor to score four minutes from the break and Sam Freeman added the conversion.

Freeman put his side further ahead four minutes into the second half when went through some weak tackles near the line to score and add the conversion. Jordan Case, George Delaney and Spedding then had further chances for the Lions before Freeman kicked a penalty for offside on sixty-three minutes and six minutes later, he made the game safe for his side when he dummied his way through by the posts and also added the conversion and there was just one more chance for the Lions when Case again went close.
