SWINTON SIGN EXCITING FORWARD BROOKS

11 August 2020

Swinton Lions are delighted to announce the signing of Scotland international forward Sam Brooks for the 2021 season.

Swinton Lions are thrilled to announce the key signing of Sam Brooks, the Wigan-born forward with a proven track record of success at the top end of the Championship with Halifax, Featherstone Rovers and Leigh Centurions.

The 26-year-old star, who also gained Super League experience with Widnes and is a full Scottish international, emerged through the academy system at Wigan before joining Halifax in 2014.

He then had a spell with Whitehaven, before joining the then Super League outfit Widnes Vikings. In 2017 and 2018 he was one of the Championship’s stand-out performers whilst with Featherstone Rovers, a reputation that he took to Leigh Centurions last year where he made 24 appearances.

“THIS SIGNING DEMONSTRATES OUR INTENT AS A CLUB”

Swinton Lions Head Coach Stuart Littler was delighted with his new signing. He said, “I am absolutely made up to be able to announce the signing of Sam Brooks. Sam has experience at both Super League and international level and is a player who, when playing at Championship level, has always been competing at the top end of the table.

“Everyone at the club is very excited about this signing. The way the game is now transitioning means that the ball is in play for longer periods. This therefore means that forwards who can play big minutes are of great value.

“When Sam is playing consistently week in, week out, his minutes are generally of a high quality. He is also now of an age where he can be an important guiding figure for the younger members of our pack. Sam is a no nonsense forward and I really do feel he will fit well into our systems and structure.

“This signing demonstrates our intent as a club and will add to our team’s ‘go forward’ capability. I am sure that every one of our great supporters will be as excited as me with this coup for the Lions.”

On signing for the club, Sam Brooks added, “I’m really excited to be joining Swinton Lions for the 2021 season. I’m looking forward to getting started with all the lads at training, and then hopefully we will have a successful season on the field. Also I can’t wait to meet the fans at Heywood Road.”

Sam Brooks has made multiple appearances for the Scotland national side

“SAM HAS DEMONSTRATED HIS STATUS AS A LEADING CHAMPIONSHIP FORWARD”

On behalf of the Lions’ Board, Operations Director Steve Wild said, “Sam’s arrival at Heywood Road represents a significant piece of business for the Lions. I know our Head Coach was keen to get a top forward with proven high-level Championship experience over the line, and the Board was therefore delighted to support Stuart in bringing Sam to the club.

“Sam has consistently demonstrated for at least the past four/five seasons his status as a leading Championship forward, and I know he’s going to be a really popular signing amongst our fans. I’m also confident that Sam will enjoy being part of the Swinton Lions family.

“At this point I also want to pay tribute to the organisers and members of our superb Pride Builder scheme, which will also be contributing significantly towards Sam’s time as a ‘Lion’. Pride Builder was entirely the brainchild of our fans, and it’s fantastic to see it evolving so quickly and making such a genuine impact.”
