SWINTON MADE TO WORK HARD AT ‘HAVEN

23 January 2018

The Lions were the victors in a tough game against League One side Whitehaven on a very soft boggy field in rainy Cumbria.

WHITEHAVEN 10-18 SWINTON LIONS

Haven were struck by injuries and only named fifteen players and Lions coach Stuart Littler was able to rotate his squad a little but Josh Barlow and Chris Worrall were unable to play with slight injuries, however should be back for the Wigan game this coming Sunday.

Haven took the lead on six minutes when hooker James Tilley went over from close range with Brad Billsborough adding the conversion. However, eight minutes later the scores were level when Matt Sarsfield broke away on the left to score and Chris Hankinson added the extras.

The buoyant Lions fans thought the team had taken the lead on the stroke of half-time when George Tyson scored in the left corner, but he was offside from Danny Ansell’s kick through and just before the hooter sounded Andy Bracek was sent to the sin bin for holding down.

Just after the break, tempers boiled over as Mike Butt and Phil Lister were sent to the sin-bin for fighting, but when the Haven man returned ten minutes later he put his side ahead scoring in the corner. The conversion fell wide.

The Lions took the lead with eighteen minutes left when Ansell kicked towards the posts and the ball bounced off the posts for Bracek to react first to score under the posts before Hankinson converted his kick.

Rhodri Lloyd made the game safe with ten minutes left when he latched onto a nice pass from Jack Hansen to score on the right with Hankinson again on target to make it three from three to send everyone home happy.
