2024 SEASON TICKETS – NOW ON SALE!

SWINTON LIONS SEASON TICKETS 2024

We need your support more than ever!

Last Sunday, on a memorable afternoon in Halifax, the Lions secured their Championship status with a fantastic 22-12 victory!

This resulted in a final league position of tenth out of 14 teams, with a creditable tally of 9 wins in our first season back in the Championship following our promotion the previous season. We took some memorable scalps along the way, defeating the likes of high-flying Toulouse and Sheffield at home, plus some major away successes at Batley, Widnes and Halifax. We achieved our aims despite it turning out to be the most competitive Championship ever.

This fine achievement wasn’t without its challenges. Having achieved promotion late in the day via the play-offs, this hampered the smoothness of our recruitment. Other factors such as being ranked 14th out of 14 in terms of central funding, alongside relatively modest home attendances compared with some of our opponents, it always meant that we were going to have to do it the hard way.

But with a spirit of togetherness which extended from the players and our coaching team, our medical and back room staff, through the boardroom, our fantastic group of volunteers and onto the terraces, aided by such great organisations such as Pridebuilder and the Supporters Trust, we achieved our aims. This spirit of togetherness cannot be underestimated – it absolutely 100% enables us to compete at this level.

As we thank outgoing head coach Allan Coleman for all of his brilliant efforts for the Lions, we now welcome a new Head Coach in Alan Kilshaw. Under Alan not only do we have to do it again, but we have to aim to set our sights higher, and certainly on a far more comfortable end to next season!

To achieve our aims and ambitions for 2024 we need YOUR support more than ever. Although our crowds held up last season well with an average of 1093, which is up there with our best since we left Station Road in 1992, our Season Ticket sales were modest 12 months ago.

If we are to hit the ground running NOW, and achieve our targets on 2024 recruitment, we will be helped enormously if as many of you as possible purchase an early Season Ticket.

As a thank you for your support we have fixed our ground Season Ticket prices at 2023 levels for adults and concessions, and slightly reduced the price of an Executive Season Ticket (Exec tickets automatically entitle you to onsite car parking and pre-match hospitality at each home game). As an added incentive everyone who purchases a season ticket by 31 October will be entered into a prize draw. The winner will receive their money back, plus a £50 merchandise voucher to spend against our new 2024 range.

Also, and to scotch any rumours on this subject, we can confirm 100% that we will continue to take to the field as SWINTON LIONS in 2024. However, it goes without saying that we need more people supporting the team as we aim to further consolidate at this level.

George Roby is a Lion – Official!

Star hooker looking to impact Championship in 2024

We are delighted to announce that George Roby, who has spent two periods on loan with us over the past couple of seasons, has now officially become a Swinton Lions player!

George made his debut at hooker in a Swinton shirt in May 2022, when he scored a try in our victory over Hunslet at South Leeds Stadium. He went on to score 10 times in 10 appearances, including a 4 try haul against Midlands Hurricanes, but sadly he missed out on our promotion play-off final victory due to injury.

However, such was his impact on League 1, that he carried off the Young Player of the Year Award at the RFL’s prestigious end of season presentations.

Although George started the current season on loan at fellow Championship outfit Bradford Bulls, we were able to secure a second loan period via his parent club, Huddersfield Giants. During the 2023 campaign George added a further 16 Swinton appearances to his tally, scoring 4 tries. This included a double when we fought back to beat high flying Sheffield Eagles in early July.

Lions’ CEO Steve Wild, “George is a great player and a great character, and he was always someone that we wanted to sign on a permanent contract at the Lions. Of course, he was officially another club’s player, and the process to bring him officially to Swinton has not been without its up and downs and immense challenges. But we got there in the end, and I know George will be just as thrilled to be playing for the Lions again as our supporters will be to see him in a Swinton shirt next season. Hopefully all connected with the club, including potential player targets, will see George’s signing as a statement of intent by Swinton Lions.”

George himself said, “Swinton is where I am happiest, and when you’re at your happiest you play your best rugby. So that’s why I’ll be staying at Swinton for the 2024 season. The Board are working really hard to bring in good signings, so please get your season tickets, it’s going to be a really enjoyable year!”

BRILLIANT LIONS RETAIN CHAMPIONSHIP STATUS!

HALIFAX PANTHERS 12 SWINTON LIONS 22

IAN RIGG at The Shay, Sunday 24 September 2023

The Lions secured their place in next season’s Betfred Championship with a superb performance against a strong Panthers side looking to secure their place in the play offs but in the end coming up short.

It was a good opening set by the Panthers pushing the Lions back towards their own line and from the next set some good passing down the left saw Ben Crooks score near the corner and Louis Jouffret was unable to convert. More pressure on the Lions line but some excellent scramble defence stopped Panthers on their attacks, but the Lions hit back on eighteen minutes when Jordy Gibson kicked forward, and Mitch Cox won the race to score on the right with Dan Abram converting to put his team ahead. Panthers tried to come back again but lost the ball on halfway and this ended with Rhodri Lloyd being grounded short and from the next paly Joery Romeo and Nick Gregson combined to send Cox over for his second and Abram converted again. Brandon Moore was then held up before the Lions again went down field to be grounded in the Panthers ten metre area and a wild pass from the play the ball saw it run along the ground and Gregson was first to react to scoop it up and score with Abram again on target. Panthers had the last attack of the half and loaded the left side but the long-floated pass to the left was intercepted by Romeo.

Panthers started the second half camped on the Lions line and the visitors gave away a penalty for obstruction near the line. From this penalty they enjoyed some good pressure on the line and eventually the defence cracked, and Lachlan Walmsley crashed over on the left, but Jouffret was unable to convert from the touchline. Rhodri Lloyd put his side further ahead on fifty minutes when Robbie Butterworth broke to feed Gav Rodden and he drew the defence to send Lloyd over on the right, but Abram could not convert this one. Walmsley then had a chance knocking on near the line from a high kick. Jouffret then also had a chance but a great block on the kick by Butterworth stopped the danger and then there was even more pressure from the Panthers attack and again a high kick for the corner and again a knock on from the flying Walmsley. The winger did eventually get over for his second when a floated looping pass found him with the line open to score in the right corner but the conversion attempt from Jouffret off the touch line struck the posts and bounced out. Panthers were getting more desperate in the final ten minutes to pull the points back but a handling error by James Saltonstall on halfway gifted the ball back to the Lions. Gibson tried a field goal with five minutes left and this was deflected by a Panthers hand and fell wide. From the goal line drop out Panthers went short and got the ball back and they went back on the attack and in the final minute Walmsley had another chance from a kick but again knocked on and in the build up to this Crooks went down with what looked like a serious shoulder injury but as the final hooter sounded the large following of Lions celebrated their safety.

LIONS LOOK TO DO IT THE HARD WAY AT HALIFAX!

The most competitive Championship ever

This week sees the culmination of the most competitive Betfred Championship ever, and as things stand not even 18 points are enough to guarantee safety.

The Lions currently lie in the second relegation spot, but it couldn’t be tighter ahead of them, with Keighley and Whitehaven, as well as Swinton, locked on 16 points from eight wins. A point ahead are Barrow on 17.

Keighley Cougars have an identical points difference to the Lions, with Whitehaven a further five to the good. Bizarrely the team to drop into League 1 could be the one that loses by the greatest margin over the weekend. Swinton are currently placed below Keighley on points average.

First up are Whitehaven, who face Toulouse Olympique at the Rec at 3pm today (Saturday). Toulouse are already guaranteed second place, and haven’t travelled as well to England this season as they have done in previous years, so chances are it will be a tight game. Of course from a Swinton, Keighley and Barrow perspective, all will be hoping for a comfortable win for TOXIII.

Tomorrow (with 3pm kick-offs) the Lions travel to Halifax, whilst Keighley go to the capital to face London Broncos at Wimbledon FC. To further complicate matters, both Halifax and London are searching for points to guarantee their places in the top six play-offs. Barrow meanwhile face York at Craven Park.

BARROW played 26, won 8, drawn 1, lost 17, for 453, against 641 (diff -188),  POINTS 17

WHITEHAVEN played 26, won 8, lost 18, for 465, against 783 (diff -318),  POINTS 16

KEIGHLEY played 26, won 8, lost 18, for 490, against -813 (diff -323),  POINTS 16

SWINTON played 26, won 8, lost 18, for 404, against 727 (diff -323),  POINTS 16

SWINTON SQUAD FOR HALIFAX

The Lions have named a 21 man squad for Halifax, but of those 21 there are a number of question marks over fitness and availability.

Definitely missing, however, is hooker George Roby, who is serving the first of a two-match ban following his questionable tackle against Barrow a fortnight ago.

Mike Butt is also absent through injury, as are Jayden Hatton, Jake Spedding, Josh Eaves and Wes Bruines, who has been kept back by our DR partners St Helens after suffering a knock in our 21-20 win over Whitehaven last week.

On the plus side, coming back into the reckoning are Andy Badrock, Nick Gregson and Joe Lowe.

The Lions will hoping for huge encouragement over at The Shay, so hopefully Swinton fans will travel in good numbers to support the team in this most important of matches.

Swinton Lions 21 man squad to face Halifax :-

Dan Abram, Andy Badrock, Kenny Baker, Lewis Baxter, Gavin Bennion, Louis Brogan, Robbie Butterworth, Jordan Case, Mitch Cox, Matty Foster, Jordan Gibson, Nick Gregson, Lewis Hall, Myles Harrop, Richard Lepori, Rhodri Lloyd, Joe Lowe, Dan Norman, Scott Parnaby, Gavin Rodden, Joey Romeo.

FEARLESS LIONS LAND CRITICAL VICTORY!

SWINTON LIONS 21 WHITEHAVEN 20

IAN RIGG at Heywood Road, Sunday 17 September 2023

A drop goal by Jordy Gibson threw the Lions a huge lifeline in their battle for Championship survival and all still depends on next weekend’s results with several sides teetering on brink. The Lions had an early penalty in the fifth minute for a high tackle on Dan Abram, but he was unable to convert the points. It was all Swinton in the opening stages starving Haven of the ball on many occasions and they actually scored off their first attack after a good passing movement saw Chris Taylor finish off on the right, but Josh Rourke was unable to add the conversion. The Lions hit back quickly when a good attack near the line saw Gibson find a big gap to score and Abram converted. Dan Spencer-Tonks was then grounded short but just after the half-hour a flowing move down the left Curtis Teare go in at the left corner and Rourke added a great conversion from the touchline. The Lions then made mistake at the restart, and this proved to be a bad outcome as Haven again put pressure on the line and Dion Aiye managed to crash over under the posts on the last tackle with Rourke again converting. Haven then made an error from the restart when the ball went past to defenders to roll dead and from the goal line drop out and with about thirty-seconds left in the half Kenny Baker forced his way over to the right of the posts and as the hooter sounded the ball sailed between the posts.

The Lions started the second half on the front foot and Haven fullback Rourke knocked on near his line and from the pressure on the line from the scrum George Roby sent out a nice short pass for Gibson to score his second and Abram converted as the Lions went back ahead. Spencer-Tonks was placed on report for a dangerous tackle on forty-seven minutes. In the very next set Abram added a thirty-metre drop goal to stretch the lead. Haven hit back again when a long kick was sent to the right and Dave Eccleston got to the ball to score in the corner, but Rourke was unable to convert. Another good chance for Haven went begging as Teare and Karl Dixon combined down the left, but the final pass was forward. Swinton were sometimes guilty of trying too hard as time and time again there was an error or lost ball on the last tackle. Rhodri Lloyd was held up on sixty-five minutes and then Haven had a couple of good chances forcing a goal line drop out and then Lachlan Lanskey went close only to lose the ball near the line. There was another Haven knock on in a good position before Roby was held up with seven minutes left. The match winner came with five minutes left when Gibson landed a thirty-metre drop goal on the last tackle but Haven were not lying down and tried their best to get on the front foot but time just ran out.

LIONS HAVE HOPE DESPITE BARROW LOSS

BARROW RAIDERS 32 SWINTON LIONS 14

IAN RIGG at Matt Johnson Prestige Stadium, Sunday 10 September

The Lions fight on for their Championship security after suffering defeat in the stormy south lakes in an error strewn game.

Raiders started brightly with a couple of early chances but the Lions defence held out and in fact Dan Abram put his team ahead with a penalty from thirty metres after Jordy Gibson was taken out off the ball, but Raiders hit back quickly and capitalised on a Lions error allowing the ball to bounce in the goal line and instead of the Lions defence booting it dead it was allowed to stay in the field of play and Luke Broadbent scored in the corner and Ryan Shaw converted from the touchline. The Lions then put pressure on the Raiders line but a short kick from George Roby was collected by a Raiders defender and they cleared the line. Roby was then sent to the sinbin on twenty-eight minutes and from the resulting penalty Jarrod Sammut put in a kick to the right and Keenan Brand scored in the right corner and Shaw again converted. Mike Butt then had a chance and was grounded just short after a ball steal from Rhodri Lloyd. Raiders capitalised again with the extra man just before the break when a break and some good ball movement saw Andrew Bulman score in the corner, but Shaw could not convert this one and Raiders held a fourteen-point lead at the break.

The Lions made a good start to the second half forcing a goal line drop out in the opening minutes, but it was Raiders who scored again when another good passing saw Shaw score and add another conversion stretching the lead. From the restart the Lions went short from the kick off, but the ball didn’t go ten metres and Broadbent picked up the ball and was penalised. From this the Lions put pressure on the Raiders line and Abram side stepped a couple of Raiders players to score to the right of the posts and add the conversion. Raiders next try came on the hour and again the Lions defence should have knocked the ball dead, but this time Brand acted quickly to score but Shaw was off target with the conversion. Five minutes later they scored again when Bulman set up Broadbent to score his second and Shaw converted this one. Everything the Lions were trying were not coming off, but it was the opposite for Raiders. Ryan Johnston hit the posts with a drop goal attempt and with five minutes left the Lions scored their second try when Andy Badrock finished off a good move on the right and Abram added the conversion. A long journey home for the large following of Lions fans.

Swinton must now beat Whitehaven at Heywood Road this coming Sunday (3pm) to retain hope of Championship survival.

Swinton Lions add three to Board!

Swinton Lions become the latest club to benefit from Rugby League’s Inclusive Boards project

Swinton Lions has become the latest professional club to benefit from the ground-breaking partnership between the Rugby Football League (RFL) and executive search firm Inclusive Boards.

Inclusive Boards specialises in supporting organisations to become more inclusive, through greater board diversity and stronger governance structures, and is working with the RFL to help broaden and strengthen the skills, knowledge and expertise within boardrooms.

The Lions, one of an initial 10 professional clubs involved in the Rugby League Inclusive Boards project, have appointed three new directors:

  • Tommy Gaughan, founder and director of The Salford Rum Company, a spiced rum brand that has gained national recognition with listings in Waitrose, Selfridges, Morrisons and the Co-op. Tommy played Rugby League for Leigh East and Leeds University, and will combine his passion for the game with his wealth of experience in marketing and branding;

  • Amarron Frederick, a financial services advisor with fifteen years’ experience supporting corporate and small to medium-sized enterprise clients, and who has also held a number of senior positions across relationship management, business development and structured finance at two of the UK’s largest banks. Amarron is also a trustee at one of the UK’s largest multi-academy trusts, and has a passion for sports including Rugby League, football, F1 and tennis:

  • Lisa Murgatroyd, a leader in the Armed Forces third sector, serving as Strategic Development Director at Armed Forces Community HQ. Her background includes previous service in youth work, and a career in the private sector managing co-working business hubs and tech start-ups. Lisa is passionate about social mobility, working with under-represented groups to promote better life chances. She’s been an avid Rugby League fan since her father, a RAF veteran, began taking her to games at the age of 11, and is looking forward to supporting Swinton Lions in the growth of on-field and off-field success.

On behalf of the Lions, CEO Steve Wild said, “We are delighted to have taken part in this ground-breaking partnership between the Rugby Football League and the executive search firm, Inclusive Boards. Having successfully completed the programme we were able to link up with three outstanding individuals, whom we first interviewed at length over two sessions each, and then formally invited to join the Swinton Lions Board of Directors.

“Each of our new ‘recruits’ was able to offer something different but valuable to our club structure, allied to their educational and business experiences. Between them they will add skills, knowledge and expertise to our boardroom. The process also demonstrates in a very practical sense that we are an open and welcoming club, always willing to be self-critical, and encourage new talent to join us if we feel it will enhance our organisation and encourage future success.”

RFL Inclusion Lead, Ben Abberstein, added, “The Board Diversity Project aims to ensure that Rugby League’s reputation for inclusion at all levels applies at the very highest level – in club boardrooms. This project is another important part of our TACKLE IT inclusion strategy and a massive step forward for the game – a step that is only made possible by the commitment of clubs such as Swinton Lions.”

The 10 clubs currently taking part in the Rugby League Club Board Diversity Project are: Barrow Raiders; Halifax Panthers; Huddersfield Giants; Hunslet; Midland Hurricanes; Salford Red Devils; Sheffield Eagles; Swinton Lions; Wakefield Trinity; Widnes Vikings. Inclusive Boards is working alongside all participating clubs.

Tigers recall Cain Robb

Cain Robb recalled by Tigers

Our on-loan hooker Cain Robb has been recalled by Castleford Tigers.

We originally signed Cain on loan until the end of the current season, but the Tigers’ own circumstances have necessitated an early recall which we respect.

Cain made a winning debut for the Lions in our recent victory over Keighley Cougars, and he also featured against Toulouse and Bradford. He missed out on the weekend’s trip to York owing to a failed HIA against Bradford.

We’d like to thank Cain for his fine efforts in a Lions shirt, and we also thank all at Castleford for making the loan possible.

Knights agony for Lions at York

YORK KNIGHTS 26 SWINTON LIONS 22

IAN RIGG at the LNER Stadium, Sunday 3 September

Despite equalling the home side’s four tries, the Lions were edged out in a close battle at York. With three league games now remaining, and with Swinton 2 points adrift of safety, the Lions are pinning salvation on a trip to Barrow next Sunday, and a home game against Whitehaven the week after. The Cumbrian clubs being the two sides immediately above them in the league table.

The Knights kept up their play-off hopes with a narrow win over the Lions who could have snatched something right at the death with a penalty play as the hooter sounded. Allan Coleman’s side started well, and Andy Badrock almost put Mike Butt over in the opening minutes but then on five minutes Brendan Santi knocked on in the Lions twenty. The Lions opened the scoring on nine minutes when Louis Brogan broke down the middle to feed the supporting Dan Abram and he raced in by the posts and added the simple conversion. They then forced a goal line drop out on the next play, but nothing came from it, and it was the Knights who drew level when Jordan Thompson crashed in from short range after a penalty to his side and Liam Harris converted. Matty Foster then pulled off a try saver on Myles Harrison but from more pressure Will Jubb capitalised on a Lions ball handling error to go over by the posts and Harris again converted. Gav Rodden for the Lions and Santi for the Knights then both had chances but couldn’t finish but Harris converted a short-range penalty for a push by George Roby on Santi. The Lions finished the first half stronger, and Mike Butt had a chance before a nice scrum move just before the hooter saw Joe Lowe cross in the left corner, but Abram could not convert.

It was a mad start to the second half when the Lions substitute Jordan Case was sent to the sinbin for an illegal tackle on Pauli Pauli but they couldn’t capitalise on the pressure until the Lions made an horrendous ball handing error in their own twenty and Oli Pratt collected the loose ball to race in by the posts with Harris again on target. The Lions were not lying down and on fifty-one minutes Roby scored from close range on the last tackle and Abram converted. Kenny Baker then had a good chance just before the hour trying to score under the posts but couldn’t hold Roby’s pass. Pratt then added his second try on sixty-three minutes evading about six tackles before scoring to the left of the posts and again Harris was on target with the conversion. The Lions forced a Knights handling error from the restart but from the pressure the final pass again went to ground about ten metres out. Joey Romeo went for the left corner with ten minutes left but as the defence sent him towards touch and he offloaded in the tackle, but Abram could not gather with the line at his mercy. Brogan got a deserved try with four minutes left when Abram broke clear and fed him to score under the posts and Abram converted and it was game on again. Pauli Pauli then had a golden chance for the Knights but couldn’t hold the pass with the line open and the Lions broke again only to lose the ball in the Knights thirty and another chance went. And there was another chance for the Lions as the hooter sounded as they were awarded a penalty near the Knights line but eventually the tackle was made, and the game ended.
