OFF-FIELD APPOINTMENT FOR THE LIONS

14 May 2018

Swinton Lions are delighted to confirm that Sale-based businessman John Coyne has joined the Board of Directors of the Club.

Swinton Lions are delighted to confirm that Sale-based businessman John Coyne has accepted a unanimous invitation to join the Board of Directors of the Club.

Wigan-born Coyne, a former professional footballer who played for Wigan Athletic from 1997 to 2000, will join the club with a particular focus on supporting commercial growth and also strategic development in the Sale and Altrincham area.

A Commercial Director at leading retail technology company Venditan, John first came across rugby league watching Wigan in the 80’s and 90’s and having moved to Sale in 2012, first watched Swinton during the 2015 season. He has since introduced circa 20-25 regular attendees to Swinton home games and Venditan have also become a valued match and player sponsor in 2018, since getting to know Lions Chairman Andy Mazey in September of last year.

Commenting on his appointment Chairman Andy Mazey said, “John is a great bloke with a great family and really buys into our vision for the future of this historic club. When I proposed John to the Board following on from a series of talks and meetings with him, our directors were unanimous in their support.

“John will bring his vast knowledge of the sports industry, his professional network and a significant commercial expertise. I’m particularly delighted that he will continue his progressive approach to engaging new people with the Lions and indeed the sport of rugby league. Welcome to the Lions family, John.”

John added “I’m delighted to be joining the Swinton Lions board at such an exciting and opportune time. Having watched the Supporters pull together through adversity last season, and the great escape to stay in the championship, I decided to get further involved this season through sponsorship.

“Since then I’ve been talking with Andy Mazey about how I can further help the club this season and this has led to my joining him and the team to help drive the club forward. One of the big opportunities is to try and grow the fan base in Sale and Altrincham, and we’ve already started working on initiatives to do that.”
