LIONS’ SKIPPER LLOYD COMMITS WITH TWO-YEAR DEAL

19 July 2020

Swinton Lions are delighted to announce that captain Rhodri Lloyd has committed to a new two-year deal with the club.

Swinton fans will be delighted with the news that our captain and Welsh international, Rhodri Lloyd has confirmed a new two-year deal with the Lions.

Lloyd, 26, made his debut for the club back in our promotion season of 2015 and has now made more than 100 appearances for Swinton. He will be looking to lead the Lions to a successful campaign in 2021, plus there will be the small matter of the Rugby League World Cup to look forward to.

As the youngest player ever to be capped for Wales, he has also become a key performer for his country. He played a starring role for the Dragons in the 2018 European Championship, as well as appearing in the 2017 World Cup. He was named captain of the Lions at the start of the 2019 season.

During lockdown in the United Kingdom, Rhodri has taken part in a unique worldwide charity run in support of Save The Children’s Yemen appeal.

‘I’M DELIGHTED TO BE SIGNING A NEW DEAL’

The Lions skipper, who also celebrates his birthday this week, explained, “I am delighted to be signing a new two-year deal with the Lions. The coaching staff, board and fans have all looked after me since I arrived at the club in 2015 and I’m really happy here.

“This will be my 7th season with the Lions, and Swinton has become a big part of mine and Beth’s lives. I’m looking forward to leading the Lions for the next two years and to continue to progress and improve as a player.

The Board, Stuart and Allan have big ambitions for the next few years, and I’ve no doubt that we will continue to build and progress into the future. Roll on the next few years! Diolch yn fawr!”

‘RHODRI IS VERY PROUD TO CAPTAIN SWINTON LIONS’

Head Coach Stuart Littler added, “It’s massive news that we have re-signed our very influential club captain, Rhodri Lloyd. It was vitally important that we got Rhodri completed due to his tremendous commitment to our cause.

“He is another player who was not without admirers at other clubs, and therefore we are very happy to have kept hold of him on a two-year deal.

“Rhodri has now been here since 2015 and he has been through everything with us both good and bad. He buys into everything we are trying to create at the club and he will continue to be very influential in our future successes. He has really grown with his leadership skills within his role as club captain and is someone I really trust.

“I know Rhodri is very proud to captain Swinton Lions and he has a huge amount of respect from our playing staff and coaching team. Even though Rhodri seems to have been playing forever, he still young and has lots of quality years in front of him.

“His experiences and knowledge base are very valuable and he is someone I can bounce ideas off. We are all committed to driving this club forwards and it is a journey we are going to enjoy. I know our great fans will be as made up as me with this one.”
