The Lions’ new Pride Builder Fund assists Ilias Bergal’s return to Swinton Lions.

The club is absolutely delighted to announce the loan signing of French winger Ilias Bergal from Leigh.

Swinton fans really took Ilias to their hearts at the back end of last season, when he came to Heywood Road at the height of the club’s troubles and plundered five tries in only six appearances. Those efforts ultimately proved pivotal in the final shake up, particularly Ilias’s try against Oldham in the relegation decider. He made a lasting impression with both team mates and fans alike, and as such he represents a valuable and timely addition to the squad. It’s especially fitting that the fans have played a pivotal role in Ilias’s return thanks to the newly established “Pride Builder Fund”.

Head Coach Stuart Littler admitted, “I’m thrilled to have secured the loan signing of Ilias Bergal, who is a player that represented us outstandingly last season. During that period his confidence grew and grew, both in playing performances but also within the interaction amongst our player group. Ilias is an international who represented France at last year’s World Cup, so there’s no doubting his ability. He is a player we have monitored closely and when the opportunity arose we moved quickly to secure his signature. I would like to thank all the staff at Leigh Centurions for making the loan move possible and I am sure our superb fans will give Ilias the warm welcome he deserves this weekend against Toulouse. I appreciate that the fans have played a crucial part in our ability to bring Ilias back to Heywood Road.”

Chairman Andy Mazey added, “I’m sure I speak on behalf of the whole Board as well as all of our fans when I say that we are delighted to welcome Ilias Bergal back to Swinton Lions on an initial month’s loan. Thanks and praise must go to everyone who has so far committed to “The Pride Builder Fund”, because it’s a fact that without that brilliant initiative this deal would not have been possible. So what better way to mark the arrival of that new supporter driven fund, than to have enabled Stuart to strengthen our backline with not just a top quality player, but a quality person as well. Welcome back Ilias!”
