‘IT’S ONE OF THE BIGGEST GAMES OF THE YEAR’

16 May 2019

Swinton Lions captain Rhodri Lloyd previews the weekend’s clash against Rochdale Hornets at the Summer Bash.

Rhodri Lloyd has said that this weekend is ‘one of the biggest games of the year’ and expresses the squad’s excitement to be at Blackpool’s Summer Bash.

The Lions face Rochdale Hornets in the second game of the weekend at Blackpool FC’s Bloomfield Road, following the opening clash between Toronto and Toulouse.

The Summer Bash made its debut in 2015, inspired by the exciting Magic Weekend in the Super League, and has had consecutive successful years at Bloomfield Road.

Last year, the Lions secured their first victory of the season over Rochdale, with tries from Luke Waterworth, George Tyson, Will Hope, Josh Woods and Liam Paisley – whilst Chris Hankinson was 100% with the boot.

Swinton and Rochdale recently faced in the Good Friday derby, with the Lions claiming the two-points at Heywood Road over their oldest rivals.

Mike Butt stole the limelight with four impressive tries and the Man of the Match award, whilst teammates Oscar Thomas, Liam Forsyth and Gavin Bennion also crossed for four-pointers.

Swinton kick off against Rochdale at half three, with a strong following expected to support the team.

“The lads are really looking forward to it. It’s a great occasion for fans but also for the players. It’s live on Sky and one of the biggest games of the year,” said Lloyd.

“Rochdale are a much improved side with a new coach who has brought new energy to the club, investing in local lads, so it’s going to be tough.

“I think it’s going to be an exciting derby, with both teams looking for a victory.

“Fans can start to get excited now!”

Lloyd also praises the support from the fans so far this season, which included a big following that helped break Championship attendance records at Toronto’s Lamport Stadium.

“Our fans have been immense, not just this year but for the five years I’ve been here. Hopefully we can get another win at Blackpool so we can celebrate together,” he said.

“We love playing there and Adam Jones is a big Blackpool fan, so he’s going to love it. Former player Charlie Adam is his favourite.

“Bloomfield Road is a great venue and the fact it’s in the town centre makes it that more exciting.”
