The club is delighted to confirm the signing of former England and Warrington Wolves front-rower Paul Wood on a deal for the remainder of the 2018 Championship season.
Swinton Lions are delighted to announce the signing of former England international front-rower and Challenge Cup winner Paul Wood for the remainder of the season.
A successful 15-year stint with Warrington Wolves saw the forward make 237 appearances, scoring 37 tries before he joined Featherstone Rovers in the 2015 Championship season.
The 36-year-old veteran prop recently came out of retirement to help Whitehaven RLFC in Betfred League One in their bid to reach the play-offs.
A two-time Challenge Cup winner, Wigan-born Wood has been known to be one of the hardest stars within the sport and has also represented his country on two occasions in 2005.
He will join the Lions for the remainder of the 2018 Championship season, adding a great strength of experience for the Championship Shield and Swinton’s fight to keep its Championship status.
Upon signing for the Lions, Paul Wood said: “After the Whitehaven deal fell through due to the take over not happening I felt gutted, I’d prepared myself to play and be part of a team again.”
“Since it became public knowledge the deal wasn’t happening I was contacted by a few clubs to see if I would be interested to help them out at the back end of the season.
“I spoke to Stuart Littler at the Legends game between Yorkshire and Lancashire which Stuart and I both played in and after the match he said if I was interested there may be a position open at Swinton Lions.”
“After a few conversations I decided to join the Lions. It seems all the clubs I’ve spoken to just want an experienced head in their team and someone that will give 100% that will bring a bit more confidence to the team and I’m hoping that I can help the young lads within the team help secure a Championship spot for Swinton next year.”
Upon securing the services of Wood, Head Coach Stuart Littler said: “I’m absolutely delighted to announce the signing of a former GB international and Challenge Cup winner who will add vast experience and leadership to our team.
“We have been working hard this week to bring in some experience who will add value to our young side at this important stage of the season.
Paul ticks every box and once I spoke to him his enthusiasm for a return struck me. I know exactly what Paul is about and I am looking forward to his integration into our team.
“Paul will assist in the development of every member within our pack and I cannot wait for him to get cracking with us. Can I thank all the people involved in bringing this quality to our side and especially thank our Chairman for his tireless work and backing the vision. At times this week I’ve felt like Harry Redknapp trying to nail a deal but I am happy all our hard work has come to fruition.
“Welcome Paul and I am sure our great fans will welcome the addition of some proven quality and leadership. We need you all now more than ever.”
