LIONS ANNOUNCE COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP WITH LONGHORNS

27 August 2020

Swinton Lions launch a Community Club Partnership Program with Longhorns Rugby League Club.

Swinton Lions RLFC is delighted to announce that a formal community partnership has been agreed with Longhorns Rugby League Club, which is based in Ashbourne, Republic of Ireland, just a few miles to the north of Dublin.

Whilst naturally it is envisaged that the agreement will provide future player pathway opportunities, this will not be the only aspect of the relationship. As has been outlined in a previous release, the concept of the Swinton Lions community club partnership programme is also linked to operational management support; coaching development & training opportunities; and assisting with resource support and equipment.

Swinton’s Director of Development, Damian Ridpath, explained, “We are thrilled to add the Longhorns to our family of community clubs. This is the fourth partnership for the Lions following similar arrangements with Belfast Eagles, Folly Lane and Devon Sharks.

“It’s really important to both Swinton Lions and our Lions Foundation that we support the community game in our traditional catchment region as well as areas that would usually be classed as non-traditional for Rugby League.

“We are therefore proud to assist the development of the sport across the UK and Ireland, whilst at the same time broadening recognition of the Swinton Lions brand.”

“Longhorns RL are the current RLI National Champions, and indeed have again reached the Grand Final which will be played in Galway in September.

Our Lions family is growing larger and with this latest partnership addition it means that we now have representation and will be providing opportunities in three different countries. I look forward to developing our relationship with Longhorns and to maximising the benefits it will bring to both our organisations.”

Matt Connolly, club captain of the Longhorns added, “We at Longhorns are excited to be in partnership with Swinton Lions. The partnership will help ensure that our club’s development is constantly improving and it will create an opportunities pathway from which both clubs can benefit.

To have this opportunity to link up with a historic professional club like Swinton Lions on a regular basis will not just assist our off field club development and structures, but is also a massive plus for us to maximise our potential and help grow the sport of Rugby League here in the Republic of Ireland.”
