The Swinton Lions Community Sports Foundation is pleased to announce the appointment of John Whalley as Director of Women & Girls Rugby League and Community Development Manager.
John’s appointment represents a major step in the Foundation’s ambition to grow women’s and girls’ rugby league and strengthen inclusive community sport across the region. He will lead the strategic and operational delivery of all women’s and girls’ rugby programmes, while supporting the Foundation’s wider participation and inclusion work.

In his role, John will oversee the Manchester Swinton Lionesses, including the elite women’s team and all female pathways — from Rugbees (ages 7–11) and Girls Long-Term Player Development (ages 12–19) through to peer-led initiatives and social rugby opportunities.
Alongside this, John will help expand the Foundation’s inclusive offer, supporting the development of accessible rugby league and community sport programmes that encourage participation, wellbeing, and opportunity for people of all ages and backgrounds.
Speaking on his appointment, John Whalley said:
“This is an exciting opportunity to help shape the future of women’s and girls’ rugby league, while strengthening the Foundation’s impact across the community. My focus is on creating clear pathways, increasing participation, and ensuring rugby league is inclusive, welcoming, and accessible to all.”
Jason Harborow, Chair of the Swinton Lions Community Sports Foundation, added:
“John’s appointment underlines our commitment to women’s and girls’ rugby league and inclusive community sport. He brings the leadership, expertise, and values needed to grow the Lionesses, strengthen female pathways, and deliver our ‘One Club, One Vision’ approach. We’re delighted to welcome him.”
