Swinton Lions Under 19’s came from behind to earn a draw in an entertaining last game of the season.
Widnes opened the scoring straight from the kick off. They quickly moved down the field before moving the ball out to the left winger to score near the corner. The stand-off converted. It was attack after attack from the Vikings as the Lions struggled to get out of their own half. The left side second rower was held up before their scrum half went on a run. His pass to the right side second rower sent him through to score. The conversion attempt was successful. They increased their lead when the hooker sent the right centre in to score. Again, the conversion attempt was successful. The Vikings knocked the ball on at the restart. From the scrum, Luke Fisher went on a run. The ball was moved across to Harley Lewis who moved further across to Jenson Bamber. His pass sent Lawson Bromilow in at the corner. Harley Lewis converted.
The Lions continued to attack the Vikings line. After a Widnes knock on, Cassius Turner-Walsh went on a run and was tackled short of the line. Jenson Bamber tried to burrow his way over the line from dummy half but lost control of the ball. Widnes’s next possession ended with a knock on. This allowed the Lions to launch another attack. Runs by Cassius Turner-Walsh, Callum Derrick, Zac Dennett and Jake Grice got them close to the line. A Jenson Bamber kick into the in-goal was too long. All the Lions pressure eventually paid off. After forcing Widnes into another knock on, they launched another attack with runs by Jake Grice, Jenson Bamber and Zac Dennett. A long pass by Harley Lewis sent Lawson Bromilow in at the corner. Harley Lewis converted.
The Lions conceded a penalty at the start of the second half. The Vikings quickly moved the ball to the Lions line. The scrum half sent the right-hand prop through a gap, but he lost control of the ball whilst trying to score. The Lions got the ball up to halfway on their next attack but were penalised for back chatting to the referee. Widnes punished them when the scrum half sent the loose forward through a gap to score in the corner. The conversion was missed. The Lions hit back immediately when Widnes knocked on at the restart. From the scrum, Harley Lewis weaved his way through the Vikings defence on a 20-metre run to score. He converted his own try. The Lions then took the lead for the first time. Widnes were penalised for offside at the kick off. Runs by Callum Derrick, Zac Dennett, Cassius Turner-Walsh and Luke Fisher gave the Lions good field position. Harley Lewis sent the ball out wide to Jake Grice who sent Toby Calderbank-Mannix in to score. Harley Lewis converted. Widnes went back on the attack but good defence from the Lions kept them at bay.
Widnes retook the lead in the sixth minute with a sweeping move out of defence which sent the full back away to score. The conversion was missed. They extended their lead five minutes later. The Lions went into touch whilst clearing their own line. This gave the Vikings good field position to launch their next attack. The ball was moved across the field to the left winger who dived over to score in the corner. Again, the conversion was missed. The Lions were quickly back on the attack when Widnes knocked on at the kick off. Cassius Turner-Walsh sent Harley Lewis through a gap but he lost control of the ball. The Lions levelled the scores in the last minute. They were awarded a penalty and quickly moved the ball into the Widnes half. A high ball was knocked on by the Widnes defence. From the scrum, Harley Lewis sent Jake Grice through a gap to score near the posts. Harley Lewis converted.
