LIONESSES FINISH 2ND IN WOMEN’S RL LEAGUE 1
22 September 2022
Swinton Lionesses in their first formal season have finished 2nd in the Women’s RL League 1 with a fantastic record of 10 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss.
This weekend our Lionesses will play Illingworth in the play off semi final Kick off 2.30pm @ Folly Lane ARLFC.
If you haven’t had the opportunity to watch our Lionesses we highly recommend it and the players would love a big crowd on Sunday to cheer them on. The Lionesses have an excellent squad with good players in all positions, however in the last week 3 of the girls have been selected for the England Community Lions squad for some forthcoming international games against other home nations. The players Mia Atherton (centre), Chloe Birkett (second row) and Maddison Higson (Full back) have played consistently to a high level all season.
Illingworth are a good side who recently held our Lionesses to a 14-all draw in Yorkshire, however the Lionesses defeated them earlier in the season at Heywood Road by a 20-10 scoreline in a very competitive fixture. This Sunday’s game is sure to be a cracker. The Lionesses coaching staff lead by the newly appointed England Community Lions coach Martina Greenwood have been preparing the team well for the match and are expecting a good performance from the team. Martina expressed the following thoughts “The game on Sunday will be a fantastic clash of two of the best teams in the league. We have played Illingworth on 9 separate occasions and all encounters have been exciting to watch and a real battle, exactly why we play rugby league. Furthermore we as a team have truly come on over a short period of time, with some outstanding achievements together but also some individual highlights. Recently we have had 3 of our ladies selected for representative honours, making it through to the England Community Lions squad – a true testament to their hard work on and off the pitch this season.”
“Sunday will be the first Semi final as Swinton Lionesses Women’s team and we aim to make the most of it, This week we have prepared well, we are confident in our game plan but we know what Illingworth will also bring to the table also and we are ready. A spectacle not to be missed for sure”.
If successful the Lionesses hope to face the winner of league leaders Sheffield Eagles and Halifax in a game which will take place @ Odsal Stadium, Bradford on the 2nd October.
Damian Ridpath Lions’ Director of Development ” I am absolutely delighted to see the Lionesses in their respective play offs and one game away from the League 1 Final, it really is a success story, this team formed during lockdown who didn’t meet in person for a year to achieve so much in such a short space of time is fantastic.
Following on from the under 16 success last season the team has been led fantastically well by Martina and all the coaching and medical team of Steve, Scott, Erin, Sam and team manager Jayne. Furthermore for Martina to receive recognition for her work with the Lionesses with International coaching selection is excellent. The board have fully supported the lionesses throughout the season and I would personally like to thank all the sponsors whose support has been invaluable for the team”.
Please help to ROAR our Lionesses to the final see you all @ Folly Lane on Sunday.
