At Swinton Lions RLFC we are excited to confirm that our upcoming game against Salford RLFC will not just be a Betfred Championship fixture, but will also be a contest for the inaugural Centenary Cup, celebrating 100 years since Salford was granted city status.

The match will take place at the Brick Community Stadium on Saturday 8 August (2pm), with the Rugby Football League approving the fixture to be played as a cup tie in recognition of the city’s centenary celebrations.

The Centenary Cup marks the next chapter in one of rugby’s oldest rivalries. It’s planned that moving forward the Centenary Cup will become a regular event to enhance the occasion and celebrate the time-honoured rivalry shared between Swinton Lions and Salford RLFC.

Swinton Lions CEO, Steve Wild :

“Following discussions between ourselves, Salford RLFC, Salford City Council, and the Rugby Football League, we were delighted to support the concept of the Centenary Cup. It should bring added spice to what is already one of the fiercest, and oldest, clashes in English sport!

“In fact the rivalry pre-dates the sport of rugby league itself, with the clubs first competing against each other way back in 1880.

“Swinton versus Salford is the classic Blue versus Red local derby, but one which has perhaps slipped off the radar in recent years due to the infrequency of our meetings. But with both clubs now competing in the Championship, and with historic landmarks to commemorate, including the 100th Anniversary of the City, and the 160th Anniversary of our formation, local excitement around this year’s fixtures has been palpable!

“We hope that as many Swinton supporters as possible will be able to support the Lions over at Wigan a week on Saturday!”

One ticket provides access to both fixtures, with Wigan Warriors taking on Toulouse Olympique in a Super League fixture kicking-off at 5.30pm.
