Manchester Swinton Lionesses: A New Era for Women’s Rugby League

The Swinton Lionesses proudly announce the launch of their new identity — Manchester Swinton Lionesses — marking an exciting new chapter for women’s rugby league and for one of the sport’s most historic clubs.
This evolution celebrates the proud heritage of Swinton Lions RLFC while embracing the wider opportunities that come with representing Greater Manchester on the national stage. It reflects how a traditional club is using innovation, inclusivity, and shared purpose to create new momentum across the entire organisation.
The new identity embodies the club’s “One Club, One Vision” philosophy — a commitment to unity between the men’s and women’s teams, growing participation at all levels, and positioning Swinton Lions as a modern, community-focused, and ambitious rugby league club.
“A Defining Moment for the Lionesses”
Jason Harborow, Team Chair of the Manchester Swinton Lionesses, said:
“This is a defining moment for the Lionesses and for the club as a whole.
The Manchester Swinton Lionesses identity celebrates our proud Swinton roots whileembracing the energy, ambition, and reach of Manchester — one of the world’s great sporting cities.
This evolution is about more than a new name or logo; it’s about creating a platform for women and girls across Greater Manchester to be inspired, to belong, and to believe they can achieve greatness in our sport.
It also represents the wider direction of Swinton Lions — a progressive club that’s proud of its history but unafraid to innovate. We want to build a fresh and diverse fan base, attract new commercial partners, and ensure the whole club reflects the community we represent.”
“Manchester is a City Built on Sport and Community”

Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester, said:
“Manchester is a city built on sport, strength, and community — and the Manchester Swinton Lionesses embody all of that. This new identity is a powerful statement about where women’s rugby league is heading and the role Greater Manchester will play in shaping that future.”
“Equality, Unity, and Progress Across the Club”
Andy Unwin, Club Chair of Swinton Lions RLFC, added:
“The launch of the Manchester Swinton Lionesses demonstrates our absolute commitment to equality, unity, and progress across the club.
Our ‘One Club, One Vision’ approach isn’t just a slogan — it’s a mindset that underpins everything we do.
By aligning the men’s and women’s teams, embracing innovation, and celebrating inclusion, we’re positioning Swinton Lions as a modern, forward-thinking club that reflects the energy and diversity of Greater Manchester.”
“We’re So Proud of This Team”
Sammi Simpson, Captain of the Manchester Swinton Lionesses, said:
“We’re so proud of what this team has achieved in such a short time, and this next step feels like a natural evolution.
Wearing ‘Manchester Swinton Lionesses’ on our shirts will remind us of where we’ve come from — and how far we can go together. We want to inspire the next generation of players, supporters, and families to be part of something special.”
