GOOLE VIKINGS  28

SWINTON LIONS 4

IAN RIGG            Victoria Pleasure Grounds         Sunday

Goole Vikings pulled off a super win against the high-flying Lions. Paul Wood’s team started sly and had the best of the early chances but should have taken the lead on eleven minutes when Louie Roberts broke down the right and decided to take on his opposite number, but Josh Guzdeck just got to him and forced the tackle. Jaylan Hodgson made a break, and it took an excellent tackle from Frank Sergent to stop him making further progress. The Lions took the lead on twenty minutes when Jack Stevens converted a penalty for back chat to the official. Five minutes later he converted a second for an off the ball tackle thirty metres out. Vikings were awarded their first penalty of the match on the half hour, and this laid the platform for Tom Lineham to finish in the corner and Reece Dean converted. The Lions defence fell apart again two minutes later when Dean created an opening for Ben Dent to cross under the posts and again Dean Converted. The Lions restart kick floated straight dead and this put them under even more pressure, and they paid for the error when Hodgson slipped a tackle to score under the posts and Dean again converted.

Vikings continued the onslaught straight from the start of the second and Dean went closed with a short kick through the line and forced a goal line drop out. From this again the pressure told when Bailey Dawson latched onto a pass to score on the left and Dean again was good with the conversion. The attack kept coming and Harry Higham had to pull off two good tackles before his side finally made some good ground to trouble the Vikings line with Jayden Hatton and Higham combining well but the defence stood up well. More Vikings pressure on the Lions line produced a twenty metre play the ball for the visitors and the Lions Ellis Anderson knocked on and this caused a small fight before Anderson was sent to the sinbin. More and more the Lions tried to break the defence but every time they were held out. The final try of the game came with four minutes left when fast hands to the right saw Lineham cross in the corner for his second, but Dean could not convert but the Vikings had already done enough.
