TOMMY GALLAGHER RETURNS TO LIONS SQUAD

03 May 2018

The club is delighted to confirm the return of Tommy Gallagher to the Lions playing squad.

The club is delighted to announce the return of Tommy Gallagher to the Lions’ playing squad on a contract until the end of the 2018 season.

Gallagher retired from playing rugby league in 2015, following his part in the promotion-winning season that took Swinton back to the Championship at the first attempt, where he scored eight tries in 22 appearances.

The loose-forward then returned to the club in late 2017, becoming Assistant Head Coach as Stuart Littler took over the playing squad following John Duffy’s departure.

In a 13-year playing career, Gallagher also featured for Leeds Rhinos, Keighley Cougars, London Broncos, Widnes Vikings, Toulouse Olympique, Hull KR, Batley Bulldogs, Rochdale Hornets, Leigh Centurions and Dewsbury Rams.

Upon his return to the Lions, Tommy Gallagher said, “I’m happy be back been training with lads and got the bug back. I think might have retired a bit early. I think still have something to offer the team and just like thank Stu and the club for giving me a chance. I’m looking forward getting back out there.”

Gallagher has been actively training with the Lions squad for the past few weeks and has also earned some minutes on the field playing rugby union for Orrell RUFC.

Head Coach Stuart Littler, who played alongside Gallagher during his playing career, echoed Tommy’s excitement.

“Some great news for the club with the re-registration of Tommy Gallagher. Tommy has been training for a number of weeks and is looking in good shape.

“He brings a heap of experience which is hard to find at the moment. Tommy talks well and can direct things around on the field. When Tommy made the suggestion re playing again we moved quickly to secure his playing services. I am looking forward to the impact this has within our playing group.”

Lions Chairman Andy Mazey added, “When Stuart floated the idea of a playing contract it was an absolute no brainer. It’s no secret we have a small squad and are scouring the market for experienced players who can add to the squad and Tommy ticks all boxes.

He’s in great shape physically and is a very popular character around the place. It will be great to see him in a Lions shirt once again. Welcome back Tommy G.”

Tommy Gallagher will join up with the Lions’ squad immediately as is available for selection in the playing squad for Saturday’s long distance trip to Canada to face Toronto Wolfpack in the Betfred Championship.
