MATTY WILKINSON IS LATEST ADDITION TO THE LIONS’ SQUAD

Our latest exciting signing for season 2022 is 25 years old hooker Matty Wilkinson, who will be joining us from Oldham.

Matty went to Oldham ahead of the 2018 season after being with Salford from the age 17. Prior to joining Oldham he had also enjoyed spells on Dual Registration with Halifax. In his time with the Roughyeds, Matty gained a reputation as a quick and skilful hooker, and a scorer of plenty of tries.

Lions’ Head Coach Allan Coleman was thrilled with this latest addition to his squad for next season. He said, “Matty Wilkinson is another I coached to representative honours in the community game. He is a very exciting player, and will prove good for us as an additional number 9. His pace and reading of the game are things which will be massive for us next year, and I admit that I am absolutely buzzing that Matty will be joining us.”

In response Matty said, “I’m really looking forward to playing for Allan Coleman again. I really enjoyed my time with him at Leigh Miners Rangers, and Allan also coached me at Lancashire amateur level. It looks like Swinton are building something exciting for next year. The Lions are clearly a good club with great facilities and they also play an attractive style of rugby. After a bit of a frustrating year personally, I’m looking forward to playing for Swinton and achieving something positive come the end of next season.”

LIONS ADD FUTURE STAR MAX ROBERTS TO 2022 SQUAD

The latest addition to the Lions’ 2022 squad is Max Roberts, a young talent that enjoyed a fantastic debut season in the Betfred Championship during 2021.

Max, who is 21, started his rugby league career as a youngster with Leigh Miners Rangers. He then moved on to Blackbrook, before signing for Wigan Warriors at the age of 15 on scholarship forms. After a successful few years with Wigan at both Academy and Reserve team levels, he moved on to Oldham ahead of the 2021 season.

Max, who is effective at centre as well as second-row, and after a highly impressive season on a personal level at Oldham, is now eagerly looking forward to a new challenge with the Lions.

Upon signing for the Lions, Max said, “I’m really looking forward to becoming a Lion for next year. It looks like Allan Coleman will be getting a great group of lads together, and I can’t wait for pre-season training to begin, and then to get playing at Swinton.”

Head Coach Allan Coleman added, “Max Roberts is a player that I know very well. He played in the same junior team as my son all through his junior rugby career. He is a fantastic young prospect with bags of potential and I know that with us at Swinton he will be brilliant. His work ethic is second to none, and he’s a player with a big future in the game. In my opinion if he maintains this progress he will be a captain of the future without a doubt.”

Welcome Max to Swinton Lions!
