SWINTON LIONS 6 FEATHERSTONE ROVERS 34

IAN RIGG Heywood Road, Sunday

Rovers kept up their unbeaten run but were made to work hard for the points against a Lions side that never gave up the fight. The Lions fielded three St Helens players on dual registration and two from Salford Reds who arrived on a two week loan. Rovers took the lead after four minutes when a good passing movement saw Gareth Gale cross in the left corner and Riley Dean added the conversion. Rovers were having difficulty controlling the ball in the early stages and Brad Day bombed a chance on the left before on thirteen minutes Kyle Evans finished off a move to score in the right corner but the conversion attempt sailed wide. The Lions hit back on twenty-two minutes when Jordy Gibson sent out a nice pass for James Greenwood to score to the right of the posts and Dan Abram converted. Matty Wildie then had a chance but he knocked on in the Lions twenty and this chance was quickly followed when Lions hooker Josh Eaves was held up. Joey Leilua then blew a chance when he threw a pass into touch with a couple of minutes to the break, but they did score with a minute left when Josh Hardcastle went over on the left and Dean added the conversion.

The start to the second half was error strewn when the Lions knock on from the kick and then Craig Kopczak knocked on in the next set in a good position. Leilua was sent to the sinbin on forty-six minutes for obstruction, but the Lions were unable to capitalise when the first attack broke down. Rovers went further ahead on fifty minutes when Thomas Lacans raced in from thirty metres to score near the corner, but Dean was off target with the conversion. Rovers then had a couple more attacks on the Lions line, but some great defence held them out. Matteiu Cozza was sent to the sinbin for an illegal tackle on Louis Brogan but it was the visitors who made he most of the extra man when Connor Jones went over from close range and Dean added the conversion. Greenwood made a good break from his own twenty to set up a Lions attack but this ended with them knocking on in the Rovers twenty. Evans then added his second when some good build up down the right saw Leilua put in a nice reverse pass for his winger to cut in and score near the corner but Dean was unable to convert from the touchline. Lions fullback Abram was sent to the sinbin three minutes from time for holding down after trying to stop a Rovers attack. The final try came with two minutes left when Rovers made the most of the extra man when Caleb Aekins scored in the right corner but the conversion attempt hit the posts and bounced out but they had done enough to win the game and send the fans home happy.

BARROW RAIDERS 32 SWINTON LIONS 14

IAN RIGG at Matt Johnson Prestige Stadium

Despite a bright start in cold and damp Barrow the Lions crashed out of the Challenge Cup at the first hurdle.

Rhodri Lloyd put the Lions ahead in the third minute when he scored in the left corner after some good build up play but Dan Abram was unable to convert and just after the restart the Lions should have scored again when Liam Cooper raced thirty metres towards the posts only to be grounded just short by Luke Broadbent. Lloyd grabbed his second on twelve minutes when he latched onto a nice chip kick by Joe Lowe to again slide over on the left and Abram converted this one. Raiders scrum half Ryan Johnston was held up seven minutes later before Danny Langtree got them on the board scoring on the right and Ryan Shaw converted  and within a couple of minutes they were in the lead when Shaw himself crossed in the right corner and he judged the wind perfectly to add the conversion off the touchline. Jayden Hatton thought he had put the Lions back in the lead nine minutes from the break but the final pass from Andy Badrock was forward. Lloyd was then sent to the sin-bin three minutes from the break for holding down and Raiders went further ahead just before the half time hooter when Shaw added a penalty goal for offside.

Raiders blitzed the Lions line in the opening eight minutes of the half when firstly Johnston scored by the posts and then Ben Evans did likewise with Shaw converting both. Lloyd then had a chance for the Lions when he chased another kick on fifty-two minutes but was also injured in the process and played no further part in the game. Broadbent extended the Raiders lead when he scored seven minutes from time and Shaw again converted but the Lions scored the final points of the match when Kenny Baker went over on the right but Dan Abram could not convert against the wind.

TEAM: Abram. Hatton. Badrock, Lloyd, Hughes, Lowe, Gibson, Case, Gregson, Cooper, Baker, Cox, Brogan. Subs: Waterworth, Burgess, Parnaby, Hall.

Dougie back in the Lions’ Den!

Dougie back in the Lions’ Den!

At Swinton Lions we are delighted to welcome back the versatile Lewis Charnock into the club. “Dougie”, who now goes by the surname “Hall”, was undoubtedly one of our success stories during our 2022 promotion season. Always playing with total determination and on the front-foot, he was a great favourite amongst the Swinton faithful. Indeed he finished a very close 4th in the supporters’ Player of the Year vote.

At the end of the 2022 season Lewis announced his intention to retire from the sport, and despite our disappointment he departed with our very best wishes for the future. However, such was his love for rugby league and for Swinton Lions, he began to ponder his decision. He kept in touch with us, and maintained a good level of fitness, and now we are thrilled to be able to offer him a new contract for the remainder of the 2023 season.

Lewis told us, “My time off in ‘retirement’ gave me time to reflect and it made me realise I’m not ready to give up playing. If anything, the time away has made me even more determined to come back better. I’m looking forward to getting back out there and I would like to thank Allan and the all the staff, players and Board at the Lions for welcoming me back.”

Given Dougie’s pedigree and our current injury crisis, his return is especially welcome and valuable, and no doubt he will be in Head Coach Allan Coleman’s thoughts for our cup trip to Barrow at the weekend.

YORK KNIGHTS 40

IAN RIGG Heywood Road, Sunday

The Knights put in their performance of the season with an impressive victory over the Lions on their own patch scoring eight tries in the process. They got off to a dream start when the Lions made an error straight from the kick off when a Lions player who took the kick off stepped over the dead ball line putting the Knights on the attack straight away and finished off their first set with AJ Towse diving over in the left corner, but James Glover was unable to convert. The second try came on six minutes when they won a scrum near the line and Ata Hingano found a nice gap to roll over and score by the posts and Glover converted. Towse almost added his second a few minutes later but a great tackle by Jake Spedding knocked him into touch but they did add a third on fifteen minutes when Myles Harrison found the overlap to score in the corner and Glover converted. Lions had a rare chance when George Delaney went close and then the final pass went to ground. Joe Brown then scored the fourth try on sixty-eight minutes when he linked with Liam Harris on the right, but Glover was unable to convert. Joe Lowe then had another chance for the Lions but his kick over the goal line ran dead but Brown added his second two minutes from the break when he took a nice pass from Hingano to put the ball down by the posts and Glover converted again.

The Knights started the second half just as they had finished the first and scored their next try five minutes in when Josh Daley dived over from acting half back by the posts and again the conversion was good from Glover. Towse scored his second try on fifty-seven minutes with good passing by Hingano and Levi Edwards who kept the ball alive in the attack, but Glover was unable to convert this one. Harris then made a good break on sixty-five minutes but was caught by Louis Brogan and just after this and incident went on report for possible foul play by a Knights player. Delaney and Kenny Baker then both went close for the Lions, but good defence held them out. The final try came with six minutes left after another scrum move near the line and Harrison crashed in at the corner, but this time Harris took over the kicking but was unable to convert from the touchline. In the final minute the Lions had one more chance, but again good defence denied them.

Station Road Anniversary

Today, 2nd March 2023, marks the exact 94th Anniversary of the opening of our famous ground at Station Road – a stadium which would soon become synonymous with so many Test Matches, Challenge Cup semi-finals, and Lancashire Cup finals, not to mention four Championship successes of Swinton Lions in 1931, 1935, 1963 and 1964, to give us an overall tally of 6 titles.

Back on 2nd March 1929 a crowd of 22,000 assembled to see the opening game, which was against Wigan, on a frost-bound pitch. The honour of scoring the partially completed ground’s first points befell on Swinton legend Martin Hodgson, who booted two penalties to give the Lions a half-time 4-0 lead. However, the first try on the ground was scored by Wigan’s Roy Kinnear, father of the actor of the same name. When Kinnear scored there wasn’t much time left on the clock, and fortunately for the home side the usually dependable Jim Sullivan missed the conversion attempt. Swiftly play moved to the other end, and to deafening roars the Lions’ winger Frank Buckingham skipped over for a try, augmented by Hodgson. The Lions had won 9-3, to bring the curtain down on a memorable day in the club’s history.

Sadly of course we all know what happened to Station Road 63 years later in 1992, but our spirit continues to live on strongly, and we remain immensely proud of our fantastic history.

The Swinton line-up, pictured here on that historic day in 1929, was, back-row left to right, Jim Turner, Fred Butters, Dick Cracknell, Bert Morris, Miller Strong, Martin Hodgson. Front row, Bobby Scott, Harold Evans, Albert Atkinson, Hector Halsall (captain), Frank Evans, Frank Buckingham, Billo Rees.

WHITEHAVEN 20 SWINTON LIONS 4

IAN RIGG LEL Arena, Sunday

Despite domination of the ball the Lions suffered defeat in Cumbria as Whitehaven scored their first victory of the season. Haven had the first chance of the game when winger Jake Douglas went for the corner but was tackled into touch and then on eight minutes Andy Badrock looked like he had opened the scoring for the Lions, but he was judged offside from a kick touching down near the corner. Rhodri Lloyd and Jake Spedding then had chances but handling errors stopped them. Badrock then scored his fourth try in four games on seventeen minutes after a nice pass from Luke Waterworth but Dan Abram was unable to convert from far out. There was then another couple of chances for the Lions with firstly Jodry Gibson losing the ball near the line and then Josh Eaves was held up, but it was Haven who took the lead just before the break after an interception from his own line by Josh Rourke and he set up the position for Chris Taylor to score four minutes from the break and Sam Freeman added the conversion.

Freeman put his side further ahead four minutes into the second half when went through some weak tackles near the line to score and add the conversion. Jordan Case, George Delaney and Spedding then had further chances for the Lions before Freeman kicked a penalty for offside on sixty-three minutes and six minutes later, he made the game safe for his side when he dummied his way through by the posts and also added the conversion and there was just one more chance for the Lions when Case again went close.

TEAM – Abram, Spedding, Badrock, Lloyd, Butt, Gregson, Gibson, Baker, Waterworth, Delaney, Cox, Rodden, Brogan. SUBS: Eaves, Case, Cooper, Romeo.

SWINTON LIONS 20 BARROW RAIDERS 18

IAN RIGG Heywood Road, Sunday

The Lions snatched victory in the final minute of a pulsating encounter that had everything, some super defence from both sides, some sinbins, and some exciting tries. Raiders took the lead in the first minute when Ryan Shaw landed a simple penalty from in front of the posts after Mike Butt held a player down with the defence in scramble mode. Ollie Olds was sent to the sin bin on fourteen minutes when he kicked ball away to delay a restart, but Raiders were unable to capitalise. Lions dual registered winger Jumah Sambou had a good chance to score in the left corner three minutes later but lost control of the ball going for the corner. Dan Abram then levelled the scores with a forty-metre penalty goal. Luke Cresswell and Abram then both had chances for their respective teams but again defence was good. An incident went on report on the half hour for what looked like an illegal tackle on Sambou and then Butt had a good chance before Raiders went back into the lead two minutes from the break when an overlap saw Shane Toal dive in at the corner but Shaw was unable to convert from the touchline and from the restart Raiders knocked on but there was no time left on the clock for the scrum in the away ten metres.

Lions levelled the scores on the first minute of the second half when a good break by Mitch Cox finished with a good passing movement and Jayden Hatton scoring the corner and Abram was unable to convert from the touchline. Raiders went into the lead again ten minutes later when Greg Worthington finished on the overlap and Shaw again converted. Ben Evans then had a good chance for Raiders, but again good defence held them out. Lions scored again with eighteen minutes left when Andy Badrock went over for his third try in as many games near the corner, but this also went unconverted. Luke Waterworth was sent to the sinbin for obstruction two minutes later and from the penalty Raiders made the Lions pay when Ryan Johnston scored under the posts and Shaw again made no mistake with his kick, but the Lions were not going away and with seven minutes left Josh Eaves went over from short range under the posts and Abram converted to bring them within two points. Still both sides were attacking each other and some great defence stopped Toal from scoring in the corner and with three minutes left he had a break down the left wing and a superb cover tackle by Badrock knocked him into touch but the Lions were still probing and pressing right to the end and the winning try came with about ninety seconds left on the clock when Jordy Gibson launched a high kick towards the Raiders defence and Hatton climbed highest to collect the ball in the air and then offloaded backwards. The ball bounced off the floor and hit a Raiders defender playing it towards the try line and Gibson managed to collect it and head for the corner despite being ankle tapped he managed to regather his feet and scramble to get the ball down in the corner to send the crowd to their feet in the stand but Abram was unable to convert again but at the restart there was only twenty-two seconds left and the Lions controlled the kick off to complete the victory.

BATLEY BULLDOGS 16 SWINTON LIONS 30

IAN RIGG Fox’s Biscuits Stadium, Sunday

A superb performance by the Lions gave them a deserved victory over the Bulldogs on their home turf for the first time in seven years. Lions coach Allan Coleman made changes to his team after the narrow defeat by Newcastle and the Bulldogs also had to reshuffle after losing some of his squad to injury in their defeat in London last week, but don’t take anything away from the Lions performance playing up the slope in the first half they took an early lead when Dan Abram landed a twenty-metre penalty goal for obstruction. They went further ahead on sixteen minutes when Gav Rodden won a one on one ball steal in the Bulldogs twenty and a few passes later Rhodri Lloyd sent Mike Butt over in the left corner but Abram could not convert from the touchline.

Bulldogs then started to get into the game and hooker Ben Kaye was held up on twenty-two minutes and they scored their opening try three minutes later when Lucas Walshaw went over on the right but James Meadows could not convert. Morgan Burgess then went close for the Lions before Bulldogs controversially took the lead on thirty-two minutes when they put up a high kick from around half way and the Bulldogs chasing pack down the left looked offside to the naked eye and as the ball came down Jayden Hatton went for it but collided with the Bulldogs winger and the ball bounced to the hands of Dane Manning who raced in at the corner against the protests from the side lines and Meadows added the conversion to this one. The Lions finished the half strongly and had a couple of chances before the break with Andy Badrock going closest. It had been an outstanding defensive display from Allan Colemans team to go in only four points behand at the break.

The home side had the better start to the second half playing up the slope and went further ahead on forty-seven minutes when Kieran Buchanan finished off a passing movement to score on the left with Meadows again on target with the conversion.

The Lions then too control of the game with Louis Brogan going close of fifty-four minutes and Abram also four minutes later. Josh Eaves scored his first Lions try just after the hour when he darted over to the left of the posts after Kenny Baker had gone close and Abram converted. Try of the match came on sixty-three minutes when Rodden broke down the right leaving Manning in his wake before drawing Meadows and handing the ball onto the supporting Badrock and he raced away to score under the posts with Abram converting.

Young Saints prop George Delaney had an impressive debut for the Lions cutting huge holes in the Bulldogs defence and Louis Brogan was doing the same. The Lions fourth try came on seventy minutes when the won their first scrum of the match in the Bulldogs thirty and Abram linked with the attack to take on several defenders near the line to twist over and score on the right and add the conversion too. Bulldogs had a chance with six minutes left but Nyle Flynn was held up but it was the Lions who scored again with two minutes left when again Rodden exploited a gap in the Bulldogs defence to race through and send the supporting Ollie Olds away to score his first Lions try under the posts in front of the noisy Lions fans and Abram converted again to cement a fine performance for the team.

SWINTON LIONS 6 NEWCASTLE THUNDER 18

Thunder took the points in a tough encounter with a strong performance against the Lions. The visitors started strongly and had a good early pressure on the line but some good defence matched their efforts and the first real chance came on nine minutes when Jordy Gibson put a kick to the corner but Andy Badrock could not control the bounce and knocked on over the line. Again Thunder came strong and the Lions defence had to show their metal to stop Marcus Walker as he went for the corner but was just knocked into touch. Another chance came the Lions way on sixteen minutes but again they lost the ball just metres from the line. Brad Gallagher was held up for Thunder and then Alex Young could have scored in the corner but the final pass sailed over his head before Alex Foster too had a good chance but lost the ball short of the line. Joey Romeo had a chance for the Lions five minutes from the break, but he too lost the ball and this set up a good position for Thunder and this saw winger Alex Clegg cross in the corner but was brought back for a double movement. The deadlock was finally broken two minute from the break when some good play down the right saw Badrock dummy the defence to score in the right corner but the conversion attempt from Nick Gregson hit the crossbar and it bounced out as the half time hooter sounded.

The Lions started better in the second half but again they made a handling error when Liam Cooper lost the ball in a good position and the chance went. Luke Waterworth then went close for the Lions but his final pass ended up in the hands of a Thunder defender who cleared the line. Thunder took the lead on fifty-six minutes when good passing got Alex Young over in the left corner and Nikau Williams added a great conversion from the touchline. Gav Rodden then went over for the Lions but he was offside from the kick trough but on sixty-three minutes Gregson levelled the scores with a penalty goal. The Lions were now starting to put pressure on the line and Rhodri Lloyd thought he had scored on the left only to be held up. Both defences played really well and Williams went for a drop goal with seven minutes left only to have it charged down by Josh Eaves but this gave them the springboard to finish the game stronger and more good passing saw Young add his second try in the corner with five minutes left and Williams again converted from the touchline before Williams made victory safe when he again went for a drop goal but this time sold a huge dummy to several defenders to score to the right of the posts and convert as the final hooter sounded.
