LIONS BRING IN NEW DIRECTOR & INVESTOR
Welcome to the Lions Peter Smith!
Swinton Lions are delighted to announce the arrival of a significant new name in the Boardroom, as the club continues its remarkable off-field transformation over the past three months.
Fresh from securing their coveted place in the Rugby League Championship for 2018, and days after revealing that a significant historic HMRC debt has been cleared in full, the Lions have welcomed Sale-based businessman Peter Smith to the club as Commercial Director. Peter is also the Managing Director of Principal Energy Solutions, the UK’s leading organisation in the field of energy procurement advice to medium and large companies.
Peter is no stranger to the Lions, having already been involved as a regular match day sponsor. He has been greatly impressed by the club’s recent off-field progress, and together with the Board’s firm commitment to a sustainable future, he was prompted to get involved on a more formal level. Not only will Peter have an active role as a Director, he will also bring with him significant investment and sponsorship, and fans will see the PES logo on the playing kit during 2018.
Peter’s task at the Lions will be to utilise his wide experience and contacts from 27 years in business to oversee the club’s vital commercial operations. Having agreed his role, Peter said, “I am very proud to become Commercial Director at this marvellous club. I am really looking forward to working with the rest of the Board, and I’d like to thank them for allowing me to join what I’m sure will be an exciting and successful journey. The club has gone through some tough times over the past 12 months, but I’m delighted that the Lions have come through it. One of the main reasons that I have decided to invest and get involved at Board level, is because I’ve been so impressed with the supporters of this incredible club. The passion they show on a weekly basis is remarkable and I’m looking forward to being part of that myself.”
Andy Mazey, the recently appointed Chairman of Swinton Lions, added, “I’d like to thank Peter for accepting the offer to join us. Peter has been an extremely supportive sponsor of the club over the past year and it’s through Swinton Lions we have become friends. He is a great bloke, and has bought into the exciting new vision we have for the future of this famous and ambitious club.
“When I suggested inviting him onto the board the directors were unanimous in their support. I have always stated we want to build Swinton Lions for the future in a sustainable manner, and by adding quality proven business people – in particular ones that have a passion for the club and are willing to invest value time and finance – will enable this to happen.
“Not only has Peter become the first high profile shirt sponsor to commit to the Lions for 2018, but he will also take control of the commercial department working day to day within our management structure. I have no doubt he will add huge value and drive the great work that is already being done, bringing his own ideas and business acumen to the Lions’.”
There is no doubt that the Lions are making significant progress both on and off the field, which represents vital preparation for what is sure to be a highly competitive Championship competition next season.
