Lions U16s Play Curtain Raiser at Heywood Road

09 August 2021

Manchester Lions U16s took another giant step in their development on Sunday when they played Chorley Panthers who are a strong, well established junior Rugby League team.

The Lions were playing their first game at the Heywood Road ground which was a curtain raiser to the Swinton Lions first team game.

Both teams played some exciting rugby league and competed well. There were some great individual performances from the Manchester Lions and an excellent team effort from all the players, some who have never played rugby league before.

Captain Dan Welford led the team well throughout the game well supported by prop Qais Derregia, full back Will Hitchen, loose forward Josh Gibbon and Alex Curley.

Although Chorley ended up winning the game, Manchester Lions showed real determination and some great defence from winger Dylan Clark, prop Joe Waring and hooker Dan Dockry and attacking play by half backs Fraser Gillan, Will Celerier and Harry Jamieson who laid the platform for the Lions forwards to make an impact into the Chorley defence line throughout the game.

Lions coach Gareth Pratt was quick to praise all the players from both teams after the game and thanked all the families and friends for their continued support with this new team. The next training session is at Carrington on Wednesday 11th August at 5.30pm.
