LIONS SEEK BACKING OF SPORTING COMMUNITY

04 April 2021

Following fine victories over Newcastle Thunder and Oldham, SWINTON LIONS are now a tantalising 80 minutes away from playing in a Wembley Cup Final for the first time in the club’s long history. But whilst we wait to see who we draw in the AB Sundecks 1895 Cup semi-finals, we have also progressed to the 3rd Round of the prestigious Betfred Rugby League Challenge Cup.

In the last 16 of the Challenge Cup we have been handed a plum home draw against Super League giants Warrington Wolves (kick-off 12.30pm on Sunday 11th April).

Yet devastatingly, instead of looking forward (in front of a full house) to the return of former Swinton Lion Matty Ashton who is now starring for the Wolves, as well as potentially welcoming global Rugby League superstar Greg Inglis and his Warrington team mates, fans face only locked stadium doors under Covid protocol.

The loss of a paying crowd for this massive cup tie is a heart-breaking financial punch in the face for the Lions. We estimate lost revenue from the tie will be in the region of £40,000, which is a huge blow for a club at our level. Not only would that income have underpinned our off-field community strategy and on-field efforts for the rest of 2021, it would have also helped put us in good shape ahead of season 2022.

We would therefore like to appeal to the wider Rugby League world to purchase a “virtual” ticket for just £10. Sadly the ticket won’t gain you entry to the match, but it will help replace some of the lost revenue which would have been so valuable to the Lions.

However, we absolutely don’t expect something for nothing! For every £10 virtual ticket bought, we will offer the purchaser a £10 discount against any future ticket bought for a Swinton Lions home league game once government crowd restrictions have been lifted. In addition, all purchasers will be entered into a raffle to win a VIP Match Day experience for two at a suitable future date.
