Lions and Rams agree date switch in bid for post-covid crowd

15 March 2021

Our home fixture versus Dewsbury Rams will now take place at Heywood Road on Monday 17th May, kick-off 7.45pm (subject to prevailing government legislation).

The game was originally scheduled to take place the previous Sunday, but kick-off has now been delayed by a day in the hope that this will enable us to welcome back spectators – 17th May being one of the key staging dates in the government’s post-covid road map. The caveat being that if in the meantime crowd restrictions are extended by government, the game will revert back to Sunday 16th May behind closed doors.

Lions’ CEO Steve Wild explained, “We hope that by taking this step we will be able to welcome back our loyal supporters a little earlier than originally envisaged. If all goes well between now and then, then our game against the Rams could be a really special occasion both on and off the pitch. Coincidentally, May of this year coincides with the 125th Anniversary of the Lions joining the Northern Union (Rugby League), and it would be wonderful to mark the occasion with all of our supporters back in the ground.

“I’d like to express our sincere thanks to Mark Sawyer, the chairman of Dewsbury Rams, who so readily agreed to our request to move the date. The Rams have shown the true spirit of Rugby League and we are extremely grateful for their co-operation. Similarly I’d also like to thank our stadium hosts Sale FC for welcoming our request, as did Trafford Borough Council to whom we also extend our thanks.

“As 17th May draws nearer, we will unveil more specific detail regarding what we hope will be a big celebration for our club.”
