LIONESSES TRIUMPH IN DOUBLE-HEADER!

24 June 2024

Swinton Lionesses 30 Illingworth 10

Alan Dixon at Heywood Road

After a few weeks off, the Lionesses got back to winning ways with a hard earned victory over Illingworth Ladies at Heywood Road. The match was the first instalment of a rugby league double-header, with the Lions and Barrow Raiders to follow.

The Lionesses got off to the worst possible start when they allowed the kick off to go into touch. From the turnover, Illingworth moved the ball across the field to attack the Lionesses line. Good defence stopped the move with Illingworth’s Maia Taktikos being tackled into touch 10 metres short of the line. A good run by Lottie Meacham got the Lionesses on the front foot. After a penalty, Lucy Baggaley barged over by the posts to score. Jodie Morris converted to give the Lionesses a 6-0 lead after 10 minutes. Eight minutes later they were in again. Mollie-Anne Pickering put up a high ball which hit the post and bounced back into the field of play. Emily Haley collected the bouncing ball and rounded the defence to score out wide. Jodie Morris was unable to convert.

The Lionesses scored again in the 24th Minute. Illingworth knocked on and from the resulting scrum, Ellie Thirkell was tackled on the line. The ball was moved across field and this time Lucy Baggaley was tackled just short of the line. Emma Dwyer dived over to score from acting half. Again Jodie Morris was unable to convert. Illingworth got on the scoreboard in the 33rd minute. The Lionesses failed to find touch with a penalty. Illingworth then moved the ball across field which allowed Jess Oldroyd to go on a 30 metre weaving run to the line. She was unable to convert her own try. Illingworth thought they were in again 5 minutes later. After a penalty for a high tackle, the ball was moved down field. A good run by Maia Taktikos was ended with a tackle by Catherine Sweeney which kept the Lionesses 14-4 lead intact to half time.

Illingworth scored again in the 43rd Minute. After the Lionesses lost possession, the ball was moved across to Holly Waddington who went on a 20 metre run to score. Jess Oldroyd converted to narrow the Lionesses lead to 14-10. Four minutes later it was the Lionesses turn to score. After an Illingworth knock on, the Lionesses moved the ball across the field which allowed Eve Ashcroft to cut through the defence to score. Jodie Morris added the conversion to extend the Lionesses lead to 20-10. Five minutes later they were in again. Illingworth were penalised for offside after a Lionesses kick. This allowed the Lionesses to attack down the middle and Emma Dwyer crossed for her second try near the posts. Jodie Morris added the extras for a 26-10 lead.

The Lionesses final try came in the 65th minute. They won a scrum and moved the ball across field. A superb pass by Helena Ryan put Amelia Newton through a gap to score. The conversion was missed and the Lionesses now lead 30-10. The Lionesses went back on the attack for the remainder of the game and with 5 minutes left Emma Dwyer was tackled just short of the line.
