The Swinton Lionesses enjoyed the tremendous experience of playing at Heywood Road on Sunday when they took on an experienced and polished Illingworth team.
In a highly competitive game, the Lionesses struck first, but found themselves 18-6 down at the break. In the second half the Lionesses fought back to reduce the deficit to 22-18, but two late tries by Illingworth gave the final scoreline a flattering look of 32-18.
Head Coach Martina Greenwood commented, “On first reflection yesterday’s result was somewhat disappointing. However, the girls played with so much heart and determination and there are many positives to take away and build upon. We have to remember that this was only the second time the girls have played together. We started really well and then we came back strongly later in the game, however, in the last five minutes we gave Illingworth two tries to finish it off. I have to say there was some fabulous play from some of youngest members of our team. We are slowly building something special here in Greater Manchester, so it’s onwards and upwards from yesterday and onto this week’s challenge. Finally I want to take this opportunity to thank all involved at Swinton Lions and Sale FC Rugby Club for hosting the ladies game yesterday – the ladies appreciated it and felt really well supported.”
