Greater Manchester Player Development League – Festival 2

13 July 2021

Last weekend the second Greater Manchester Player Development League Festival was hosted by the Swinton Lions Community Sports Foundation. Over 100 players between the ages of 7 and 14 attended the 6 hour long festival which took place at the Sale FC training ground at Carrington.

The clubs that attended were Manchester Lions, South Trafford Raiders, Wythenshawe, Heywood Hornets and Bolton Red Devils. Both Heywood and Wythenshawe were making their competitive debuts in the sport of Rugby League.

Damian Ridpath, the Swinton Lions’ Director of Development, said, “It was a great day, and considering the recent surge in Covid cases it was fantastic to see the five clubs attending with so many young people in the various age groups.

“There is a positive direction of travel for the sport, and it was great to see representatives from the RFL, together with the foundations of Salford Red Devils, Rochdale Hornets and Manchester Rangers all in attendance and supporting the young participants alongside our own staff. All the games were competitive, with some excellent talent and skills on show.

“I would like to acknowledge the huge contribution from the volunteers of the Swinton Supporters Trust, and to say thank you to our partners Sale FC for allowing us access to their fantastic facility at Carrington, and for their assistance in co-ordinating the activity.”

Manchester Lions, who of course are an integral component of the Swinton Lions community development strategy, have playing age groups from Under 10s to Under 16s. Training currently takes place at 7pm on a Wednesday night at Carrington. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch by email if you would like any further information [email protected].
