FANS’ FAVOURITE ASHTON SIGNS CONTRACT EXTENSION

10 July 2019

Matty Ashton has re-signed with the club for the 2020 season.

The good news continues to flow from Swinton Lions with confirmation that fans’ favourite Matty Ashton has agreed a new contract extension.

His signature represents a significant coup for the Lions, who have had to fight off considerable interest from elsewhere to secure another of their star players for season 2020.

Chairman Andy Mazey said, “It’s fantastic news for the club and our supporters that we’ve managed to secure one of the sport’s most exciting young prospects, Matty Ashton, to the end of 2020.

“It’s a real statement of intent of where we want to be as a club and I really hope the supporters will unite behind us as we head into an exciting new chapter for this club. We’ve been working hard on this deal for quite some time now, so I’m delighted to have got it concluded.

“Matty has been fantastic for us this season and I’m looking forward to seeing him continue his development under our coach and staff in the famous Lions shirt.”

20 years old Ashton has taken the Championship by storm with consistent and impressive displays at both full-back and wing. In 18 appearances for the Lions he has already contributed 17 tries, statistics which place him amongst the top scorers in the whole of the competition.

His strength and speed were perhaps best typified by a terrific 90 metre try against Rochdale Hornets in front of the live Sky Sports TV cameras at the Summer Bash!

The former Rochdale Mayfield youngster explained his reasons for staying with the ambitious Lions, “I’m glad to get the deal over the line and I’m now looking forward to what the future holds.

“We have such a young squad who love playing rugby league with each other and expressing ourselves. All the boys have such a close bond off the pitch as well as on it, and hopefully I’m going to be part of building something special for the club.

“I also want to add a big thank you to all the coaching staff at the Lions, who have helped me to progress personally since I joined the club. It’s important now that we finish the year strongly and build for a big 2020.”

Matty’s contract extension was also enthusiastically welcomed by Lions’ Head Coach, Stuart Littler. He added, “To agree a contract renewal with the most exciting young prospect in this competition is a massive statement of intent from our Chairman and Board as to how much we want this club to progress.

“We have re-signed a very special young talent who brings excitement every time he carries the ball. Matty is also a great person who I have known since coaching the Rochdale service area when he was in the Under 14s. He has really developed in his first full professional season after a successful stint over in Australia. I really feel we have secured a gem and I’ve no doubt that he will play Super League in the not too distant future. To have secured his signature with the serious competition we have faced is absolutely massive news for our club.”
