1969 LANCASHIRE CUP LIONS HONOURED IN NEW KIT

21 April 2019

The club is delighted to reveal a new special edition commemorative shirt to honour the 1969 Lancashire Cup-winning Lions to be worn in two fixtures.

Swinton Lions are delighted to announce the arrival of Special Edition Commemorative Shirt to honour the victorious 1969 Lancashire Cup side.

The replica kit will be worn in two fixtures in the Betfred Championship, first in the home clash against Widnes Vikings on May 5 before being worn proudly at the Summer Bash in Blackpool as the Lions face Rochdale Hornets on May 18.

The iconic and instantly recognisable Swinton playing jersey, royal blue with a white “V”, was first introduced for the 1960 Lancashire Cup Final, then soon became synonymous with the great Lions team which swept to back-to-back title triumphs in 1963 and 1964.

Later with a striking double “V”, the famous Swinton shirt also saw glory when the Lions defeated Leigh 11-2 in the 1969 Lancashire Cup Final at Wigan. Since those heady days various versions on the same theme have been worn by the Lions, but it’s still the 1960s versions that instil an intense feeling of pride in all Swinton fans.

The new kit is available to pre-order now with the kit being dispatched or available for collection on Sunday 5th May during the Lions’ clash against Widnes Vikings at Heywood Road.

SHIRT ‘PART OF WHAT CLUB STANDS FOR’

Swinton Lions Chairman Andy Mazey said: “It has always been our aim to celebrate this season’s 50th year anniversary in a manner befitting of our proud heritage and we believe this new shirt is the perfect way to do so.

“Our partner’s Supro have shown how innovative they are with their designs – taking a poignant moment from our illustrious past and reshaping it for supporters into a jersey which I am sure the fans will love.

“This should also reassure our supporters that as we look to the future and endeavour to align our club with the new direction the sport is taking, we shall always remain respectful and protective of our magnificent history and heritage.”

Supro Sports CEO Tony Sheridan said: “Supro Sport is immensely proud to deliver a Special Edition shirt that represents all that is Swinton Lions. A modern day replica of the iconic 1969 shirt worn during the clubs famous Lancashire Cup win.

“A shirt isn’t just something to play in, it’s part of what the club stands for, the lion and the double ‘V’ are two symbols instantly recognisable and I have no doubt that the Lions players and fans will love the shirt, and will wear it with pride.”
